Honolulu-based National Weather Service forecasters say a high-pressure system north of the state is driving windy trades over the Aloha State, prompting the advisory for multiple islands.
Northeast winds of 20 mph to 35 mph, with gusts topping 50, are expected for northeast and southeast areas, including Kohala. The advisory, issued Tuesday afternoon, noted specifically South Point, Pahala, Hilo, Volcano, Honokaa, Waimea and Waikoloa.
“Strongest winds will affect exposed areas such as mountain ridges and points between the islands. Strong gusts are expected in leeward areas downslope of the mountains,” forecasters wrote.
The service cautioned that winds this strong are capable of downing trees and causing power outages. Motorists, especially those in high-profile vehicles, are urged to drive with extreme caution.
