Hawaii reached a grim milestone Tuesday as the number of COVID-19 cases in the Aloha State topped 10,000.
The state Department of Health on Tuesday reported 66 new cases of the novel coronavirus bringing Hawaii’s total case to 10,025 cases since Feb. 28.
Oahu reported 58 new cases, bringing the state’s most populous island’s case count to 9,058, while Hawaii Island reported six new cases bringing its total to 530. Maui saw two new cases increasing its total to 360. Kauai County’s tally held steady at 58 as did the number of resident who have tested positive while out of the state at 26.
Of the 10,025 cases identified in Hawaii to date, some 6,962 of those cases are still considered active. That includes 293 of the known cases on Hawaii Island.
Statewide, 599 COVID-19 patients have required hospitalization, including 21 on Hawaii Island, according to the center’s noon update.
The center also reported two new coronavirus-related deaths, one on Oahu and one on Maui, but provided no additional details.
Of the 88 deaths reported among Hawaii residents, 75 were on Oahu, nine were on Maui, three were on Hawaii Island, and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
Meanwhile, Avalon Healthcare, managing company of Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo, reported a ninth death on Tuesday at the care facility.
A total of 59 residents and 20 employees have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Tuesday afternoon update.
Three residents were hospitalized at Hilo Medical Center while an additional 33 were being cared for in the care facility’s designated area. As of Tuesday afternoon, 14 residents and one employee have recovered.
The state has yet to include the last six Hawaii Island deaths reported by Avalon Healthcare. The department said previously that it must confirm deaths through a verification process before releasing the information.
