No bragging pleasures for Kona
Regarding the Aug. 2 letter to the editor, titled “One day too many,” I wholeheartedly agree with the points cited in the essay. I, too, do not believe Kona’s physical and social environment would be enhanced. The economic gain to the people of Kona would be minimal. A second triathlon in Kona would exacerbate the current undesirable traits. I continue to believe there is no bragging pleasures for Kona.

Is the Big Island turning
into Oahu without safe infrastructure and resources?
Is the Hawaii County Planning department turning the Big Island into Oahu? Does it feel like every development application is being approved? Are they considering the island’s infrastructure and resources? Can we vote for council members who don’t want to turn Big Island into a city?
Will you stand and help save the Big Island from becoming a city? Will you learn the system and get your opinion heard at every Hawaii County Planning meeting to help stop over-development on the island? Will you call monthly to learn when you need to attend or email your opinion on the island’s developments? Will you speak up for the island?
Oahu has over two hours of traffic, sewer issues, parking issues, and … the Big Island does not have as many roads as Oahu and has traffic issues, parking issues, sewer issues, water issues, and… Still, it seems the planning department keeps approving more and more development applications.
There are hundreds of acres that have been approved for development, and hundreds more acres are in the application process now. We need affordable homes for locals, not overpriced homes for newcomers. Do you agree? Call the planning department and let them know.
Please contact Hawaii County Planning and learn how to get your voice heard in every meeting they have. Do not get on their email list because they won’t email you. Call them and find out when meetings are to either email your opinion, or go in-person, or on their Zoom meetings online. You must get your voice heard now or never. Please read, sign, and share two petitions at Change.org.

A dangerous strategy
I’ve seen some of the ads our Democratic leaders have funded for some of the more extreme conservatives running for office this election season.
They’re working but this strategy is outrageously dangerous. Have we lost our minds? Have the democrats become so power hungry that they think they can run this country without the representation of reasonable Republicans?
I’ve always voted democrat but this strategy not only threatens to divide us more, it threatens our democracy, our nation, our world and our future.
I beg Sens. Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz and Rep. Kai Kahele to find a way to revise this strategy. We need reasonable republicans in the ballot. We need their voices and ideas. They represent reasonable people. The others do not.
I urge my elected officials to help end this ridiculous campaign strategy before it’s too late. These campaign advertisements for Trump cronies could undo all of your good work.
