A pair of proposed bills that would loosen Hawaii County’s hiring criteria for the directors of certain departments will not be discussed until next year.
At Tuesday’s County Council committee meetings, outgoing Hilo Councilman Aaron Chung presented two bills that would ease the requirements for directors of the departments of Public Works and Environmental Management.
The bills would broaden the diversity of bachelor’s degrees a candidate must have, in an effort, Chung said, to increase the pool of potential candidates.
However, the merits of those bills were not substantially discussed on Tuesday, and council members agreed to postpone the matter until replacements for Chung and Kona Councilwoman Maile David — Jenn Kagiwada and Michelle Galimba, respectively — take their seats in December. Both Chung and David were term-limited this year.
