East meets west as cherry blossom trees begin to bloom in Waimea gardens

Waimea cherry trees begin to blossom just in time for the 30th annual Cherry Blossom Festival Saturday, Feb. 4. The day will be filled with events celebrating the harmonious blending of Hawaiian and Japanese cultures. (Voltaire Moise/Special to West Hawaii Today)

Spring in the northern hemisphere officially starts on March 21, but in upland Hawaii gardens, the budding cherry blossoms tell us spring is already here. In just one week we celebrate the 30th annual Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival. Saturday, Feb. 4, will be the official day of celebration but you can view these gorgeous trees beginning to bloom now.
