New flexibility class at Hale Halawai
Elderly Recreation Services will be starting a new gentle stretching and mobility class for anyone aged 55 and older.
This “Flexibility After Fifty-Five” class will teach techniques to develop flexibility, range of motion, core strength and inner calmness.
The class also gives a hands-on introduction to Anti-Aging Yoga, a yoga practice that is perfect for us as we age, by using long passive holds to stretch the joints and deep, connective tissues of the body, primarily the hips and lower spine area.
Classes will be held at Hale Halawai at 9 a.m. on Thursdays beginning Aug. 31. The class will run in a 10-week session and the cost is $10.
Registration and payment can be made on the first day of class.
All levels of flexibility are welcome including beginners. Please wear comfortable clothes, and bring a yoga mat if you plan to work on the floor, some yoga mats will be available.
Participants are able to work in a chair if it is more comfortable for them.

Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers

The next meeting of the West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers will he held at 7 p.m. on Monday at the HTFG office at 81-6393 Mamalahoa Highway.
The guest speaker, James Karkheck, will discuss and show unusual types of avocados. Members should bring avocados to identify and share.
Nonmembers are welcome to attend and all are encouraged to bring fruit for tasting.

Blackwater creature talk coming up
The Kona Science Cafe talk will focus on blackwater creatures from 5-7:30 p.m. Monday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Energy Center, 73-4485 Kahilihili St.
The program is part of a monthly pau hana series for people interested in technology in West Hawaii. All are welcome.
Jeff Milisen will present data-driven observations and a selection from his unique photo catalog to expose attendees to the open-ocean pelagic waters. He is an underwater photographer and biologist who has worked with whitetip reef sharks, aquaculture, cone snail venom, marine debris, and even box jellies. But his real passion is the open ocean. His lens has been focused on the plankton and micronekton that occupy the blackwater community for the past five years.
A potluck is included with the event. Attendees may bring pupu and nonalcoholic beverages to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged. There will be time before and after the presentation for questions, answers and networking.
