CHARLOTTE, N.C. — When Michael Jordan and his right-hand man, Curtis Polk, bought a NASCAR team in 2020 with driver Denny Hamlin, they were prepared to endure short-term losses. Drivers, mechanics and a sales staff had to be hired. The Next Generation cars that were introduced in 2022 would cost top teams about $18 million a year to run before paying a driver, and their team, 23XI, had two. Paying for a new building to house the cars would cost tens of millions of dollars more.

Low world-wide participation drives HIBT cancellation

The organizing committee of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) regretfully announced the cancellation of the 2024 tournament scheduled for July 27 through August 3, 2024. Despite extensive efforts to attract participants from around the globe, including robust outreach campaigns and promotional initiatives, the desired level of interest necessary to uphold the tournament’s standards has not been achieved. The 2024 billfish tournament would have been the 62nd annual.

LeBron-Curry-Durant torch has passed to a new generation
