First Big Island Pickleball Open winners named
The Waikoloa Pickleball Club sponsored the first Big Island Open Tournament, on the first two Saturdays of January at the Waimea District Park.
The tournament was organized by Gary and Barbara Zipkin, club members. Two levels of skill were displayed by eighteen, two person teams from Hawi, Keauhou, Kailua-Kona and Waikoloa.
Flight B champions were Terry and John Greenwood. Flight A Champions were Jeff Hopkins and Tom Harrison.
The club used the tournament as a fundraiser to benefit the Big Island Giving Tree, donating cash of $2,550. For more information about pickleball on the west side of Hawaii, contact Lani Larrua at 960-1388.
Participate in the Veterans Golf Tournament at Makalei
The 2020 West Hawaii Veterans Golf Tournament sponsored by the American Legion Kona Post 20 will take place on Sunday, Jan. 26, or in case of rain or inclement weather, on Monday, Jan. 27. It will be held at the Makalei Golf Course in Kailua-Kona.
Registration is at 7:15 a.m. and shotgun start is 8:30 a.m. Cost is $100 per person which includes practice balls, mulligans, lunch and prizes. Format is two-person team scramble.

Sign up for Special Olympics
Special Olympics West Hawaii’s annual Sports Sign Ups and Recognition Luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Kahalu’u Beach Park pavilion.
All Special Olympic athletes, families and volunteers are encouraged to attend. Sign ups will be for softball, swimming, track and field, powerlifting, soccer, bocce ball, bowling and basketball.
Please bring a salad or dessert.

Free 5K at the Civic Center
The County of Hawaii recreation program is holding the Groundhog Gallop race at the West Hawaii Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 1.
This free 5K, or one-mile, race is open to everyone with special prizes awarded for those aged 55 and older. No pre-registration is needed for this event.
This out and back race will start from the West Hawaii Civic Center, Bldg. B at 8 a.m. and head south down the paved path on Ane Keohokalole Highway.
