Tropical Storm Lane damage assessment under way

HONOLULU — Hawaii officials on Monday continued assessing damage from Tropical Storm Lane, which ranked as the No. 3 rainmaker from a tropical cyclone in the United States since 1950.

UPDATE: Lane weakens to tropical storm

As of 2 p.m. Friday, Hurricane Lane was spinning 85 mph winds as it tracked north-northeast at 2 mph about 115 miles west-southwest of Kailua-Kona, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu.

Shelters open in West Hawaii as storm approaches

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that five emergency shelters have been opened in North Kohala, South Kohala, North Kona and South Kona due to the potential effects of Hurricane Lane. No mandatory evacuation has been ordered.
