High surf advisory for Big Island shores

A building south-southwest swell has prompted the National Weather Service in Honolulu to issue a high surf advisory for Big Island shores through 6 p.m. Thursday.

The service forecast waves ranging from 5 feet to 8 feet for the island’s north-, east- and south-facing shores. The Kona area was also included in the advisory. Waves are expected to peak this evening.

A high surf advisory means high surf could affect beaches in the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach erosion, according to the service.
