From the frightful to the delightful, here are some Halloween happenings in West Hawaii:
One Slap Entertainment presents a Haunted Attraction from 7 to 10 p.m. today, and 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday and Thursday, Halloween, at Keauhou Shopping Center next to Subway. Entry is $8; re-entry bands allow five entries for $25. Children younger than 5 are admitted free.
Under the direction of Michaeloha Elam, a Chamber Orchestra of Kona performance will include selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” a rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the “Pink Panther” theme. Mozart’s “Violin Concerto in G,” featuring Ursula Vietze on violin, will also be performed. Concerts are slated for 7 p.m. today at Hale Halawai on Alii Drive and at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Imin Center in Holualoa.
Keauhou Farmers Market will celebrate Halloween from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Keauhou Shopping Center with trick-or-treating for homemade goodies, face painting and a kid’s costume contest with prizes. The event is free.
The fifth annual Halloween Hounds Costume Parade comes to Waimea Town Market at Parker School Saturday. Register at 9:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. parade. The event features pooches of all sizes and shapes dressed up in seasonal finery. Prize ribbons will be awarded to the funniest, cutest, scariest and judges’ choice. A pumpkin patch and corn maze will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Kohala Mountain Farm, between mile markers 12 and 13 on Kohala Mountain Road in South Kohala. Admission is free; each activity is priced individually. For more information, visit kohalamountainfarm.com.
Kona Pacific Public Charter School’s annual Halloween Journey will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the school’s campus, located above Kona Community Hospital. Guests will be led on a forest journey “Under the Sea,” with skits featuring Capt. Nemo and other characters of the high seas. Tickets are $7 and available in advance at the Kona Pacific Public Charter School office. Games, crafts, a fire pit and costumes are part of the Halloween fun. Grace Community Church hosts a harvest festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday with a kid’s bouncer, cupcake walk, face painting and games. Free chili and hot dogs will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. This event is geared for families with kids in preschool through sixth grade. Costumes are encouraged. No gory costumes are allowed. Keauhou Shopping Center hosts a family Halloween celebration, “Ohana Halloween Paaina,” from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday. A variety of vendors and activities include merchant trick-or-treating, keiki and adult costume contests, waterslides and a haunted house. Entertainment is by Kainalu, Ole School Band and LT Smooth. Hawaii Island Humane Society holds its annual Halloween Pet Walk Sunday at Kona Commons. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 9. The event includes contests and prizes. Walkers, with or without pets, are urged to raise pledges to support the Hawaii Island Humane Society. Earn at least $50 in pledges and receive a free T-shirt. Waimea Midweek Farmers Market at Pukalani Stables will hold a Halloween Hound Fashion Show. Dress up your hound and take part in the Hound Walk at noon Wednesday. Hounds will be judged and prizes will be awarded for the most “Hawaiian,” scariest and character hounds. Pick up an entry form at the market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, or visit the market’s Facebook page. Dogs must be leashed.
Kids are invited to put on their cutest or scariest costumes and join trick-or-treat fun from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday throughout the Waikoloa Village Association complex. Get candy from Banjy’s, the Pro Shop, Waikoloa Village Association office and pool. The bookmobile will offer candy and face painting.
Registration for the Lava Lava Beach Club Keiki Costume Contest gets underway at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Judging will begin at 5 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the three best costumes. All costume contest participants will receive a goodie bag and a Lava Lava Beach Club trick or treat bag, which includes a Lava Lava Beach Club discount coupon. Registration is limited to 75 children.
Solid Rock Ministries will host its annual Candy Town Halloween alternative from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Old Kona Airport Park’s football field. Kings’ Shops will host Tricks N’ Treats on Halloween night, Thursday. The fun starts at 5 p.m. with safe trick-or-treating throughout the center. At 6 p.m., The Great Barusky will entertain with a magic show, followed by a children’s costume contest. Free cotton candy and popcorn will be available, while supplies last. The first 100 children will receive a bag of treats.
Tricks, Treats and BOO-tiques make Queens’ MarketPlace a family haunt from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The open-air shopping center will fill up with princesses, superheroes and fun creatures of all shapes and sizes, as tricksters promenade for free treats and fun. Kona Baptist Church will offer an evening of family fun from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at its Hallelujah Harvest Festival. Festivities will include inflatable party bouncers, candy and prize giveaways, live music, a cake walk and a free hot dog dinner. A separate keiki play area will be available for children ages 2 to 5, and a fire truck from the neighboring station will be on display. Bring the family to New Hope Waimea Christian Fellowship’s Gymnasium for a free Ohana Fun Fair from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The event features games, face painting, contests, food, candy and balloon sculptures by Danny Dawson. An animal and biblical character costume contest is also planned. A haunted house will be hosted at the bottom of Sea View Circle in Kona from dark until about 9 p.m. Thursday. More scares and animatronics are planned this year. There is no charge for the scares; organizers ask for a donation of a nonperishable food item for The Food Basket. More than 150 pounds of food has been collected over the past two years. A Halloween party will be held at Kona Elks Lodge Thursday. A lasagna dinner starts at 6 p.m. Cost is $15 for dinner, which must be reserved by Wednesday. Dancing and live music by Ono Gumbo Zydeco is planned from 7 to 9 p.m. A costume contest is slated for 8 p.m. with prizes in three categories. Cover charge for nonmembers is $5. The Kona Gold Blues band will perform at the Korner Pocket’s annual Halloween costume contest and dance party from 9 starting at 9 p.m. Thursday.
