Big Island artists Alden Heglund, Tess Rumley, Jan Orbom, Maru Maruyama and Bobby Dehmer are holding a wood art exhibit entitled “The Soul of the Wood” Saturday through Dec. 21 at Rumley Art Gallery inside King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
The public can meet the artists during a reception from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Music will be performed by Jan Orbom and pupu will be served.
The unique wood art, sculptures and furniture are crafted using exotic woods of the Big Island. At 79, Dehmer, a retired aircraft mechanic, found his true passion in woodworking. He creates beautiful outrigger canoes and fish hooks and all kinds of wood art mostly made of koa. Orbom creates stunning pieces of Hawaiian hawks, cats and dolphins. Maruyama, who is a guitar and ukulele maker, has expanded his creative skill into creating koa jewelry and functional art. Heglund is a visual artist and cabinet maker who mostly creates conventional furniture. Rumley uses the organic form of the wood and preserves its original voice in each of her creations.
