Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has announced $77,207 in grant funding in support of initiatives aimed at promoting access to vision care, oral health care and diabetes prevention.
Project Vision will receive $19,819 for the “Better Vision for Better Life” program, which provides vision care to children, low-income residents and the homeless on Oahu and the Big Island. The funds will upgrade a vision screening vehicle on Hawaii Island and outfit it with a retinal camera. It will also support outreach on Hawaii Island and Oahu.
In addition, University of Hawaii Maui College was granted $11,388.32 and Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center received $46,000.
Lava Lava Beach Club begins weekend brunch menu
Lava Lava Beach Club at Waikoloa Resort’s Anaehoomalu Bay has begun a Bloody Mary Beach Brunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays with a selection of Bloody Marys to complement a new ala carte brunch menu. Lava Lava Beach Club’s regular lunch menu is also available each day beginning at noon.
Brunch menu items include the Hapa Laka Loco Moco, a selection of eggs benedict, waffles and a fully-loaded Big Wave Burrito.

HCFCU raises $26,000
for West Hawaii health center
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union’s Market Day, held annually at each of its five branches to celebrate International Credit Union Day, raised $26,000 this year to benefit the West Hawaii Community Health Center.
The day’s message was that credit union members are part of a global effort to take the philosophy of people helping people beyond the walls of each credit union and into local communities. The event featured fresh produce, baked goods, food vendors and silent auction items.
The health center is committed to providing quality, affordable health care to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.
Kona Subaru holds
‘Share the Love’ day
Kona Subaru welcomed Big Island residents to “Share the Love” day Dec. 7 that featured a pet adoption and supply drive for Hawaii Island Humane Society and a clothing and household supply drive for Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii.
“We are thrilled that so many pets have found loving homes and are touched by the community’s generous donations of clothes, household items, and much needed pet supplies,” said Glenn Inouye, senior vice president of Servco representing Subaru Hawaii Dealers. Kona Subaru will continue to accept clothing and household donations on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii through Dec. 31.
Travel magazine recognizes Fairmont Orchid as top resort
The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii is among the world’s best resorts, according to Conde Nast Traveler magazine.
The luxury resort was recognized for its pristine location, outstanding service, unique Hui Holokai Beach Ambassador program, Hawaiian-inspired Spa Without Walls and its cuisine at the award-winning Brown’s Beach House.
The publication’s readers helped select the resort for the prestigious Platinum Circle, which recognizes consistency in excellence for properties that make the Gold List five years in a row. The list identifies the gold standard of hotels, resorts, and cruise lines. Nearly 80,000 travelers responded to the survey in 2013.

Hawaii Vacation Rentals celebrates 20 years
In 2014, Hawaii Vacation Rentals will celebrate 20 years of offering beach and ocean view homes, cottages and condos in Puako, Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea resorts and Kohala Ranch. The company is owned by Hawaii resident Pattie Freeman.
In honor of the anniversary, when customers reserve six nights at one of the company’s rentals, they will receive the seventh night free. The special is available until July 1 and excludes Christmas and the spring break period.

Kaiser Permanente names
new chief operating officer
Leanne Hunstock will return to Kaiser Permanente Hawaii as chief operating officer, care delivery and vice president, quality beginning Jan. 6.
Hunstock brings more than 35 years of experience in health care, most recently from CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she served as senior vice president, business development. She holds a doctorate of nursing practice in executive leadership of health care systems a master of business administration, and a master of education.
In her new role, Hunstock will lead patient care operations focusing on the quality and patient-centered approach that has helped Kaiser Permanente Hawaii achieve market leadership in health care service delivery. Hunstock will replace Bill Haug, who will retire at the end of February.
