The Society for Kona’s Education and Art hosts “Na Nani O Ka Aina: The Beauties of the Land” showcasing the skill and design of quilts and other fiber art made by Big Island quilters. The show will be held Feb.
The Society for Kona’s Education and Art hosts “Na Nani O Ka Aina: The Beauties of the Land” showcasing the skill and design of quilts and other fiber art made by Big Island quilters. The show will be held Feb. 15 and 16 at SKEA, located between mile markers 105 and 106 on Hawaii Belt Road in Honaunau.
All full-and part-time residents of the island were invited to submit entries to the show, whether they were professional or amateur quilters or fiber artists. There was a limit of two individual entries per quilter.
The theme of this year’s show refers specifically to the beauty of Hawaii Island. Quilts need not reflect the theme of the show. However, there will be awards for the quilts voted best interpretation of the theme, as well as best overall, as determined by a vote of the viewers. Quilters were encouraged to develop their interpretations of the theme for entry into the show by showing the beauty that surrounds us.
In past years, this show has featured a display of quilts highlighting the trees of the island, fabric portraits and sea life.
SKEA is a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 for the purpose of providing art, culture and educational opportunities for people of all ages in the community. With a focus on South Kona, the organization serves the Hawaii Island community by providing arts and educational opportunities through programs, projects and events which enhance their lives.
