One million dollars will be appropriated to help combat the coffee berry borer, an invasive pest that has been ravaging Hawaii Island coffee farms for almost four years, Hawaii’s Congressional delegation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today.
The funding will be distributed through the USDA’s Integrated Pest Management Program and be divided between Hawaii, which will get $700,000, and Puerto Rico, which will get $300,000. The program is a scientifically-based approach to fighting invasive species, officials said.
