Sullivan Shuster of West Hawaii Explorations Academy was recognized as one of 10 district finalists in Hawaii and received a $3,000 scholarship from the Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation, Inc.
Anthony Conners of Honokaa High & Intermediate, Siena Okimoto of Ka‘u High, Charlie Belmer of Keaau High, Sarah Pike of Kealakehe High, Jocelyn Campollo of Kohala High, Shon Inouye of Konawaena High, Chrisovlandou Gronowski of Pahoa High & Intermediate, Vanessa Ignacio of Waiakea High, Sara Kim of Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii, Scott Petz of Hawaii Preparatory Academy and Maddison Nelson of Parker School each received $1,000 scholarships.
These students were among 63 recipients — one from each of the qualifying public and independent schools in the state — who received scholarships based on academic achievement, community service and financial need. In total, the foundation awarded $99,000 in scholarships this year.
Shuster is the daughter of Henry and Rebecca Shuster. Shuster was on the honor roll every year of high school, was a Pacific Science Symposium semifinalist and received a Summit Scholarship to the University of Oregon. She was team captain of varsity soccer, was in varsity water polo, was team manager of robotics and received the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Best on Hawaii Island Goalkeeper Award. She volunteered as AYSO soccer coach, the Deep and Beyond to help individuals with disabilities have snorkel and surf experiences in the ocean, in tree plantings at the West Hawaii Veterans and Kaloko cemeteries and Ironman triathlon.
Mamoru and Aiko Takitani founded Hawaiian Host Inc., manufacturer of Hawaiian Host chocolates, and established the Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation Inc. to give back to the community by providing the gift of education to the young people of Hawaii. Since 1993, the foundation has annually presented scholarships to an outstanding student from every qualifying high school in the state and has awarded over $1.9 million in scholarships.
