Woman who died at Spitting Cave was Navy sailor

HONOLULU — The woman who died Sunday at a popular Hawaii cliff-jumping location has been identified as a Navy sailor.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports 22-year-old Shannon Nunez was pulled from the water by emergency personnel off Spitting Cave.

Nunez was part of Patrol Squadron based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay.

The Navy says the native of Whittier, California, was a petty officer and aircraft mechanic. She had previously been stationed in Jacksonville, Florida.

Witnesses say Nunez jumped from a ledge and was carried out by strong currents. Her body was brought to shore and she was pronounced dead by paramedics.

An autopsy is scheduled.

On April 5, another sailor, Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Gregory Spillman of Alexandria, Pennsylvania, was swept out to sea after jumping at Spitting Cave.
