The Rim of the Pacific multinational marine security exercises are underway and activities could be seen offshore of Kawaihae Harbor Thursday.
Held every two years by Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, RIMPAC takes place in and around the Hawaiian Island. Considered the world’s largest maritime exercises, the 2014 RIMPAC has 22 nations, 49 surface ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel participating.
“RIMPAC is a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world’s oceans,” according to the U.S. Navy website.
