Kahilu Theatre will open its doors for a free Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 23.
The theater’s 2014-15 season will launch with tickets being released for public sale on that day. Family activities and entertainment inside and outside the theater will include magic, musical theater and food trucks.
The Great Barusky will perform close-up magic throughout the event, and will also perform a full magic show at noon.
Life in Pursuit will play from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. from the lobby stage. This young, three-piece group from Hamakua plays rhythm-based acoustic rock with tinges of hip-hop, reggae, blues and pop.
The Keiki Performing Arts Workshop will perform on the main stage at 1:30 p.m. The children are between 8 and 11 years old and will perform songs from musical theater favorites such as “Annie,” “Matilda,” “The King and I” and “Mary Poppins.”
Annetta Lucero will bring both circus character walkabout and baton twirling to Kahilu. Lucero is a three-time world champion in baton twirling, and is also a two-time Guinness World Record holder, a Cirque du Soleil special events artist, and a renowned choreographer. Her baton twirling shows will be at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Dance teachers from Kahilu’s after-school classes will offer free workshops on stage in hip-hop, beginning ballet and contemporary dance. Lanakila Mangauil will offer open hula classes on the grass outside the theater. The theater’s after school classes run in conjunction with Prince Dance Institute and start the second week of September. Online registration for the classes opens Sunday.
This is the first of four Family Fun Days planned for Kahilu’s 2014-15 season. The next Kahilu Family Fun Day will be Nov. 22 to celebrate the Waimea Ukulele and Slack Key Guitar Institute and Festival.
