HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii has hired an Alabama attorney with experience in sports cases to assist in a response to an investigation of the men’s basketball program.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the university has retained attorney William H. King III of the Birmingham firm of Lightfoot, Franklin & White.
According to the firm’s website, King last year represented Texas A&M when Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel was investigated by the NCAA.
University of Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay says the school is anticipating a letter of allegations and wants expertise to answer the letter.
The university Office of General Counsel is overseeing the case.
People interviewed by the NCAA say the association is investigating allegations of an altered document, team practice hours and player benefits.
