Big Island police arrested 21 drivers for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Sept. 22 and Sunday. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than age 21, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 863 DUI arrests compared with 977 during the same period last year.
Kona and South Hilo officers arrested seven drivers in each district while Puna officers arrested five motorists. Two drivers were arrested in the Kaʻu district.
There have been 1,150 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,032 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 22 during the same period last year, a decrease of 59.1 percent.
To date, six fatalities were related to drugs and three were related to a combination drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
