On Wednesday, U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory seismologist Wes Thelen will speak about Hawaii’s history of destructive earthquakes and how to prevent or minimize personal injury during the next big earthquake.
His talk begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Makaeo Events Pavilion at the Old Kona Airport Park.
Seismologist Paul Okubo will deliver a similar talk at 7 p.m. in the Sciences and Technology Building, Room 108, at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Both talks are free.

Island’s fastest cars to compete on Hilo dragstrip
The fastest import cars on Hawaii Island will gather at the Hilo dragstrip Oct. 18 and 19 for the Hawaii Drag Racing League’s third annual Import Shootout.
The event will feature Volkswagens on Saturday with the “VW Project X” eliminations. All classes of Volkswagens will compete, from bugs to buggies and all-out racers.
Also on the Saturday program will be a Gambler’s Brackets for drivers who want to run in handicap races, Diva Racing for the wahine and test sessions for the dragsters and other hot cars that want to tune up both cars and drivers for next month’s King of the Track & Nostalgia races at the track. Racing will continue in the evening with Outlaw Races for all cars, trucks and motorcycles who want to race their friends on the track.
Sunday will highlight the Japanese brands in the featured “Import Shootout.” From older rear-wheel-drive Toyotas to the hottest new Hondas, Mitsubishis, and others, the imports will race in three handicap brackets. There will be another Gambler’s Brackets battle on Sunday, as well as eliminations in the Summit Super Series, more test sessions for the hot cars and Diva Racing classes.
Gates open at 8 a.m. both days with racing continuing into the evening Saturday. General admission is $6 and free for keiki 10 and under. More information can be found at hawaiidragracingleague.com.
Library presentation focuses on double hull canoes
Sailor and canoe builder Kiko Johnston-Kitazawa will give a presentation on Waakaulua, the Hawaiian double hull canoe, at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20 at North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau.
Johnston-Kitazawa, known as Captain Kiko will bring a double hull canoe into the library to explain the canoes’s design and operation.

Active shooter presentation planned in Naalehu
The Hawaii Police Department will give an active shooter presentation during a 2 p.m. Oct. 21. meeting at Naalehu Community Center.
The presentation will help individuals increase their survivability should they encounter an active shooter or violent incident. Police will provide information on previous incidents of mass violence, and best practices for those caught in such situations.
