Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Oct. 27 and Sunday. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than 21, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 975 DUI arrests, compared with 1,093 during the same period in 2013.
South Hilo officers arrested a dozen motorists while Kona officers arrested 10 in each district. Puna officers arrested four motorists and South Kohala three. Hamakua and Ka’u officers arrested one motorist in each district.
There have been 1,314 major accidents in 2014, compared with 1,145 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island, compared with 23 during the same period in 2013.
To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol. DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
