WAIKOLOA — After being treated to a day of pristine conditions, winds up to 50 miles per hour tamed the 165-person field at the Mauna Lani Resort Hawaii State Open Saturday. Red numbers were scarce in the second round with an array of shots failing to find the bottom of the cup.
Dean Wilson — the 2012 Hawaii State Open champion — shot-back to-back 70s for a 4-under-par 140 to lead the field, two shots ahead of first-round leader Jake Grodzinsky (67-75), 2-under par 142. Wilson had five birdies and three bogeys in his stellar second round.
Christopher Tedesco, Kenneth McCready, Robby Ormand, and John Oda are in a tie for third with a 1-under par, 36-hole total 143.
Defending champion Nick Mason sits tied for 19th place after a 4-over second round. Mason finished with a 36-hole total of 153, narrowly making the professional cut of 155.
Titan Oshura, the youngest player in the field at 13 years old, fired another 79 to finish at 158 to make the 36-hole cut.
In the Senior Open division, amateur Mike Kawate (72-71) and former champion Casey Nakama (71-72) lead the field at 1-under par, 143 for 36 holes. First round leader Kevin Hayashi fell back with a second round 79, for a 4-over par total 148, tie for third with PGA professional Scott Simpson (70-78). 2015 Champions Tour National Qualifier Jeff Coston is in fifth (72-77) with a 149 total.
A-Flight division leader David Long leads the pack with a 81-82 (163). First round leader Brad Ching fell to second with a 79-85 (164).
In the Women’s Open division, amateur Allisen Corpuz scraped together a 6-over par 78, for a 149 total, ten strokes ahead of Mikado Nagatori with a 75-84 (159).
