HONOLULU — Darius Carter was a force inside with 12 points and eight rebounds, and No. 11 Wichita State had no trouble Monday night in an 80-53 victory over Loyola Marymount in the quarterfinals of the Diamond Head Classic.
The Shockers (9-1) used 14-0 runs early in the first and second periods to seize control of a game that was a mismatch from the start. The Lions (3-7) lost their fifth straight game.
Carter had six offensive rebounds, two of them leading to baskets during the first big surge. He even dropped in a rare 3-pointer during the second-half run by the Shockers. Carter played only 18 minutes because of the rout.
Tekele Cotton scored eight of the Shockers’ first 11 points. He hit a jumper with 14:42 left to cap the second run for a 53-25 lead.
Coach Gregg Marshall pulled his starters, and a few minutes later he emptied the rest of his bench.
Evan Payne led Loyola Marymount with 15 points.
Ron Baker scored 11 points for Wichita State, though he was cold most of the night.
Wichita State’s leading scorer at least set the tone in the opening minute of the second with a jumper and a 3-pointer. The Shockers led by as many as 31.
Cotton hit a 3 on Wichita State’s first possession, and the game was never in doubt. Cotton and Baker each hit 3s, and Bush Wamukota converted twice on offensive rebounds, one of them a three-point play, as Wichita State went on a 14-0 run early in the opening period for a 19-4 lead.
Colorado 82, DePaul 68
Askia Booker scored 27 points and Xavier Johnson added 20 as Colorado beat DePaul.
The Buffaloes (7-3) shot 45 percent from the field and led for all but 22 seconds early in the first half.
Booker was 6-of-12 shooting from the field and 14 of 14 from the free throw line. Johnson made 6 of 14 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, and hit all six of his free throw attempts.
Wesley Gordon added 11 points and Jaron Hopkins chipped in with 10 for Colorado, which was playing its first game in nine days.
Tommy Hamilton IV had 16 points and Billy Garrett, Jr. added 15 to lead the Blue Demons (6-5).
George Washington 77, Ohio 49
Kevin Larsen scored 19 points with a career-high 15 rebounds and George Washington beat Ohio.
Larsen had nine rebounds during the second half in which GWU (7-3) held Ohio (3-5) to 15 points on 7-of-28 shooting.
The Colonials scored 12 straight in the second half to go up 67-45 on Patricio Garino’s free throws with 6:27 left.
Kethan Savage had 18 points, Garino added 15 and John Kopriva scored 10. George Washington had only eight turnovers and outrebounded the Bobcats 44-28.
Ryan Taylor led Ohio with 13 points. His 3-pointer late in the first half cut the Bobcats deficit to 38-34, but the Colonials closed the half on a 5-0 run and Ohio would get no closer.
