HONOLULU — Last-minute tax filers are waiting four months to get their returns instead of the few weeks initially predicted by the state.
Hawaii News Now reports Department of Taxation spokeswoman Mallory Fujitani says the process is being slowed this year by paper filings and new procedures implemented to cut down on fraudulent filings.
Paper returns take more time to process, an option Fujitani says 60 percent of the state’s tax filers used.
Officials are working overtime and on weekends to catch up. The state will have to pay 4 percent interest on any returns not received by July 20.
