HONOLULU (AP) — The Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency have announced settlement details with the city and county of Honolulu to resolve air emission problems caused by a closed landfill.
The Justice Department said in a statement Tuesday that the settlement comes after the city failed to install a gas collection and control system by 2002 as required by the federal Clean Air Act.
The control system was installed in 2013 and is now functional. Gas from landfills are either known or suspected carcinogens, the statement says.
As part of the settlement Honolulu is required to pay an $875,000 fine and build a new solar power system that will power an average of 800 Oahu households.
The settlement is subject to a 30-day public comment period and court approval.
