Guam court employee fired over dismissed rape case

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — A Superior Court of Guam clerk has been fired after a rape case was dismissed because it hadn’t been placed on the court calendar for trial.

The Pacific Daily News reports administrator for the courts, Joshua Tenorio, says an investigation into the mishap determined that there was a failure on the part of an employee who had principal responsibility for calendar hearings. He declined to name the terminated employee.

The case of James Corpuz, who is suspected of raping and molesting a girl for several years, had been dismissed because the deadline for a speedy trial passed. Both the pre-trial conference and trial date had not been put on the court’s calendar.

Prosecutors have charged Corpuz again and he has again been indicted by a grand jury.
