The organization devoted to keeping the spirit of aloha alive for visitors is holding a fundraiser with Macy’s.
Called “Shop for a Cause,” the program raises money for the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii Island.
The group provides support for visitors who suffer a disaster or serious trouble, said Karen Rose, executive director.
Recently a traveler’s companion drowned, she said. The group was able to provide food to the person and emotional support during the transition, she said.
They also provide help for people who have had their identification stolen, making it impossible to get on an airplane, she said.
They want people to leave the islands with a positive memory, despite what has happened, she said.
This is the first year that that they have gone with this program, Rose said.
Much of the work is done by volunteers, she said, but things like meals cannot be provided solely through volunteer effort.
Passes are for sale that will allow the holder 30 percent off many products during the Aug. 29 shopping event.
That’s a recent increase from the 25 percent originally offered, Rose said.
The passes cost $5 and all that money goes to VASH.
It includes an entry for a $500 gift certificate at Macy’s, Rose said, with the pool of people being at each store.
What’s important is the money does not come with earmarks or pigeonhole requirements, Rose said, so the organization can use it as needed.
