Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will close all backcountry areas at 5 p.m. Wednesday ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Hilda, the National Park Service said.
The closure, which does not include the entire park, was prompted by the heavy rain and wind forecast with the arrival of Hilda, the service said. No backcountry permits will be issued until park staff reassess the storm’s impact.
The backcountry areas will remain closed until further notice.
In addition, Mauna Loa Road, from Kipukapuaulu to the Mauna Loa Lookout, and Namakanipaio Campgrounds and A-frame cabins, will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The visitor centers, restrooms, lava tube, front-country trails, steam vents, and other popular features, will remain open.
