The Coast Guard is looking for a man who launched a kayak at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday from Pahoehoe Beach.
A person reported Tuesday that a man had parked his vehicle in the parking lot, took a large bag out and entered the ocean with a brown wooden kayak with metal oars.
Investigators determined the vehicle is owned by Gregory Voight, a man in his mid-40s.
“The Coast Guard has no reports of missing persons or distress in the area but is asking for assistance from the public to locate Voight and verify his safety,” the service wrote.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts or who has seen a brown wooden kayak is asked to call the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center at 842-2600.
“The Coast Guard encourages boaters and waterway users to always file a float plan and leave it with a reliable person who can be depended upon to notify the Coast Guard, or other rescue agency, should you not return or check‐in as planned,” they wrote.
This is ahead of the expected ocean disturbances of Tropical Depression Hilda. It’s projected to pass south of the Big Island.
It is “creating a tremulous sea state with 8 to 15 feet seas and east winds gusting between 20 and 30 knots,” the Coast Guard wrote.
