A flood advisory has been extended for areas of West Hawaii until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service reports.
At 4:20 p.m., radar indicated that heavy showers over the leeward side of the Big Island are gradually decreasing, but a few locally heavy downpours continue. Heavy showers are most concentrated near Keahole Point, just south of Honaunau, and near South Point. Hawaii County Civil Defense reported significant water crossing Highway 19, near mile marker 81, north of Kiholo Bay.
Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Holualoa, Keauhou and Honaunau, as well as portions of the Ka’u District.
Forecasters urged the public to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
