Foodies and oenophiles at next week’s Uncorked Food and Wine Festival at The Shops at Mauna Lani will be indulging their good taste for a good cause, as all proceeds benefit VASH, the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii Island.
“We serve over 1,200 visitors each year, and that number is growing as the number of visitors to our island grows,” said Karen Rose, executive director of VASH.
In times of trouble, VASH volunteers step in and become people’s on-island ohana, assisting with arrangements, communication, supplies, a friendly shoulder and listening ear.
“It can be anything from helping a guest who’s had his ID stolen to obtaining the appropriate paperwork to get through TSA, to helping an elderly couple from the cruise ship find lodging because the wife suffered a stroke,” Rose said. “Sometimes, we’re there to offer support and assistance to a visitor whose loved one passed away while they were here. We strive to build relationships with visitors, so that we can help turn a terrible experience that reflects poorly on our island, into stories of true aloha.”
Rose said that the island’s business community has been supportive of its efforts, often providing reduced hotel rates, free or discounted meals, or even waiving ticket fees. Aware of the impact of the island’s reputation on its economy, most are eager to respond to requests for visitor assistance.
The Uncorked Food and Wine Festival makes it easy to help. For $50 in advance, and $70 at the door, guests can enjoy food tastings from nine island chefs, premium wines and nonalcoholic drinks, and more. At the event, which runs 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 14, a ticket becomes a passport with special offers and discounts at The Shops — valued at more than $100 — for use through the end of the year.
Featured chefs are: Norio Yamamoto of Monstera and The Blue Room Brasserie and Bar; Roger Bartle of Manta and Pavilion Wine Bar at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel; Allen Hess of the new Mai Grille; Darcy Ambrosio of Ruth’s Chris Steak House; Haruki Higashtai of Shiono at Mauna Lani; Stennis Hirayama of Tommy Bahama Restaurant; Stephen Rouelle of Under the Bodhi Tree; and Edwin Goto of Village Burger. Kona Brewing Co., Young’s Market and Southern Wine and Spirits have sponsored wines and spirits.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Meleuhane, comprised of Keikilani Lindsey and son, Leokani, whose latest album “The Garden” is up for a Grammy nomination this year. A silent auction, featuring specialty items and certificates from The Shops’ retailers and restaurants, will also benefit VASH.
Meanwhile, plans for future fundraisers are in the works, such as fishing and golf tournaments.
“It’s always exciting to come up with great ideas that help fund the great work VASH does, while simultaneously giving the community an opportunity to come together and have some fun,” said Rose. “2016 is going to be full of fun events that will give folks a chance to show their support.”
