HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police will no longer be handling calls about stray dogs and barking complaints as the work gets transferred back to the Hawaii Humane Society.
Police had been responding to the dog-related calls since fiscal year 2014. The city had ended its contract with the society after the nonprofit asked for an additional $800,000 to do the work.
Under the new animal services contract, the Humane Society will receive the additional funds it initially requested, bringing its annual total to more than $3 million.
City officials said the new contract will give police more time to deal with other priorities.
The city says the new contract started in August, but there was a delay in bringing new staff on board.
