Wailoa Center’s Main Gallery will present “I ulu no ka lala i ke kumu. The branches grow because of the trunk — Without our ancestors we would not be here.”
The exhibit opens Friday, Jan. 8 with a reception for the artists from 5 to 7 p.m. with light refreshments served and musical entertainment performed by “Apokolani.”
The event is free and opened to the public through January and will close on the 28th. The art exhibit coordinated by Bernice Akamine contains the work of a diverse group of artists with different ideas and approaches to honoring the ancestors.
The exhibit features each artist’s perspective on an aspect of Hawaiian culture that they wish to honor. Each of the artists participating in the exhibit speaks eloquently through their artwork and their daily endeavors about the importance of perpetuating and sharing of knowledge through the preservation of moʻolelo, cultural and artistic practices, and the natural environment.
Wailoa Center is a Division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources. It is free and opened to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
