KAILUA-KONA — The Big Island’s confirmed dengue fever case count increased to 259 Friday, according to the state Department of Health.
One new case was confirmed Friday, health officials said. Of the 259 cases confirmed since the outbreak began in September, just two remain potentially infectious to mosquitoes. The last onset of illness was Feb. 13.
Of the confirmed cases, 234 are Hawaii Island residents and 25 are visitors, according to the department. Forty-six of the cases have been children.
Since the start of the outbreak, officials have excluded 1,262 potential cases based on test results and/or not meeting case criteria.
Civil Defense officials said Friday that Hookena and Milolii beach parks, as well as the Waipio Valley Access Road remained closed because of dengue fever.
