KAILUA-KONA — The Kona Historical Society was awarded a $150,000 State of Hawaii Grant in Aid to help fund its “Kona Museum” Cultural and Community Programming Project, according to an organizational press release.
The society — a community-based nonprofit — announced plans in its release to use the money to develop more authentic events and programming, including workshops, lectures and film projects, for the West Hawaii public. The society owns the only permanent National Endowment for Humanities exhibits in Hawaii.
Specific note was made of exhibits to be displayed in the society’s Kona Museum Gallery upon its completion, aiming to create the first museum on all of Hawaii Island to regularly rotate exhibits focused on general history and the fine arts.
“This is a thrilling award for Kona Historical Society because it means we will be providing this community with a cultural resource and through our new venue be able to share exhibits, films, research and stories in a much more accessible way,” said Executive Director of the Kona Historical Society Joy Holland. “The state of Hawaii has really invested in the cultural life of this community with this award. We are so grateful.”
