KAILUA-KONA — The DOE announced Thursday that all Hawaii Island public schools will reopen Friday as Tropical Storm Madeline slid past the Big Island without much fuss. Public charter schools islandwide will also reopen Friday.
Schools were closed on Wednesday and Thursday in anticipation of the storm, but Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi said facilities are ready to resume operations after the potentially dangerous weather moved beyond Hawaii Island rather uneventfully.
“We assessed our school campuses this morning and no damages were reported,” she said. “We will remain vigilant as Hurricane Lester makes its way towards the islands and continue to keep everyone informed of the affects it may have on our schools.”
All after-school activities will remain cancelled through Friday.
Schools will close early in Maui County on Friday ahead of the expected arrival of Hurricane Lester, which is expected to track north of the Big Island.
