Hospital auxiliary offers nursing scholarships
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary is accepting applications for its 2017 Nursing Scholarship Program. Scholarships may be applied for by any first- or second-year nursing student.
Scholarship amounts this year are $2,000 each.
Nursing scholarship applications, forms and information are available at www.kchauxiliary.org or at the hospital’s nursing education department. Completed applications should be postmarked no later than July 1.
To qualify, an applicant must already be accepted into an accredited school of nursing, and not already be a registered nurse.

Environmental symposium starts Thursday
The Hawaii Environmental Education Alliance is hosting its annual Environmental Education Symposium Thursday through Saturday Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The event brings together formal and nonformal educators, environmental education practitioners, conservationists, and resource managers for three days of learning and networking. It features workshops, concurrent sessions and field experiences.
The theme of this year’s symposium is “Hawaii Environmental Education in a Changing Climate.”

Woodturners meet Saturday
West Hawaii Woodturners meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the former PacRimGlass Building mauka of Pine Trees Cafe.
Attendees should bring a chair, lunch and a ring bowl challenge piece. There will be a demo on the McNaughtin coring system by Kelly. Visitors always welcome.

Zipline event generates 500 pounds of food for charity
The generosity of Hawaii Island’s kamaaina has allowed KapohoKine Adventures to donate more than 500 pounds of nonperishable food to The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s Food Bank.
For the eighth year, the employees of KapohoKine Adventures spent Memorial Day Weekend showing its appreciation to locals by giving away more than 250 free zips. What started as an offer of free ziplining with a canned food donation to the first 50 in line each day ended up with KapohoKine Adventures extending its day and taking every person in line.
A two-day, free family festival was held outside of the Grand Naniloa Hilo hotel with free kayak and paddleboard use, face painting, henna tattoos, a water slide and bouncy house, live music, entertainment, games and food.
