new flood
insurance maps
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is at the end of a multi-year effort to update the Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Hawaii County, which take effect Sept. 29.
A public meeting will inform interested parties about the impacts the maps will have on flood insurance. It will help attendees make an informed decision about flood insurance options and flood protection measures.
The meeting is Thursday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building G. Doors open at 5 p.m., the presentation starts at 5:30 p.m. and at 7 p.m., personnel from FEMA and other government agencies will be available to answer questions.

Kona Traffic Safety Committee meets
The Kona Traffic Safety Committee will meet from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday to discuss traffic issues with public officials who can make a difference.
Everyone is welcome. With the completion of the bypass and proposed taxes, there will be new issues to discuss.
The committee meets the second Thursday of each month in the Mayors Conference Room of the West Hawaii Community Center, on the second floor of Building C above the license bureau.
Storyteller offers free library presentations
for keiki
Magical Storyteller Yasu Ishida will offer storytelling programs incorporating magic and origami at state libraries in conjunction with the summer reading program.
Preschoolers through fifth-graders are invited to the free, 45-minute programs and must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
“Story Circus” will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Honokaa Public Library and at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Kailua-Kona Public Library. “Origami in Motion” will be presented at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Naalehu Public Library.

Support group for the blind meets
The National Federation of the Blind, West Hawaii Chapter will meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Hale Halawai. The support group helps people with low vision that cannot be corrected with either glasses or surgery.

Hilo college hosts car show
The Hawaii Community College Auto Body Repair and Painting Car Show will be at the Manono campus in Hilo from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. It is free and open to the public.
The show features automotive celebrity Charley Hutton, one of the most talented and well-known automotive painters and fabricators. The car show will feature a variety of vehicles, including show cars, race cars, classics, imports, cruisers and trucks. The event will also feature door prizes every hour, refreshments and entertainment. Any proceeds will benefit the Auto Body Repair and Painting program.
Kuamoo battlefield restoration project update planned
On Saturday, the local chapter of the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host a program on the restoration project of the Kuamoo battlefield.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the program starts at 11:45 at the West Hawaii Civic Center, council chambers. Speakers will be Richard Stevens, Monika Frazier and Lauren Avery of the Aloha Kuamoo Aina center. Stevens and his team will present a story and update on the restoration project where the 1819 Battle of Kuamoo took place.

Kona Japanese Civic Association awards scholarships
The Kona Japanese Civic Association awarded $1,500 scholarships to Kimberly Nakamura and Logan Takizawa. Nakamura graduated from Makua Lani Christian Academy and will attend Azusa Pacific University in California where she plans to receive a teaching degree. Takizawa graduated from Konawaena High School and plans to major in psychology at Webster University in Missouri.
To qualify, both seniors wrote an essay on how the Japanese culture influenced their life and how it will influence them in the future. One of the objectives of the Kona Japanese Civic Association is to preserve the unique legacy of the many contributions of persons of Japanese ancestry to the Kona community. It is also their objective to support cultural and educational programs that promote awareness and pride in the Japanese heritage.
Funds raised from the Kona Japanese Civic Association golf tournaments supports this scholarship program. The association will host its sixth annual golf tournament July 16 at the Kona Country Club.
