This past weekend’s king tide filled small shoreline pools at Keahole Point that were drying out by Tuesday.
Native Hawaiians used sea salt, paakai (“to solidify the sea”), to season and preserve food, for religious and ceremonial purposes, and as medicine, according to the University of Hawaii at Manao. In Hawaii, sea salt can be collected from rocky shoreline pools, where it occurs as a result of natural solar evaporation.
