It came down steadily, turned to a drizzle and even when it would stop a thick mist would linger above Paiea Stadium.
Kamehameha had a turnover Friday night for each and every slippery condition — an eye-popping nine in all — but thanks to a stonewall of a defense that corralled nine turnovers of it own, the Warriors were never threatened in cruising past Hawaii Prep 62-7.
Weird things tend to happen when these BIIF Division II rivals meet, and this game of giveaway was no different, even with short-handed Ka Makani going through a clear rebuilding year.
Kamehameha’s fifth consecutive victory was ascetically displeasing offensively thanks to 12 fumbles, seven of them lost, but the Warriors (5-1, 3-0 BIIF) held Ka Makani (2-3, 1-2) to negative 49 yards.
HPA only had three plays from scrimmage gain positive yardage, and its only first down — not counting by penalty — came on its final series.
HPA turned the ball over nine times, losing eight fumbles, and Kamehameha took advantage, covering just a combined 104 yards on five of its first six scoring drives.
The outlier was Israel Bowden’s 83-yard touchdown run on third-and-16 on the final play of the first quarter, giving the Warriors a 20-0 lead.
As conditions improved in second half, so did the Warriors’ ball-security, and they scored three touchdowns apiece in the third and fourth quarters.
Kaimi Like and Kilohana Hassenritter each ran and threw for a score, Bowden rushed for two touchdowns and Bryce Furuli rumbled for 120 yards and a score for Kamehameha.
Of the 26 fumbles in the game, the most eventful one came late in the third quarter when HPA’s Kamuela Lindsey scooped up a loose ball on a kickoff return and went 62 yards for a touchdown.
