Dust off the feather boas and pull up your fishnet stockings, it’s time to head down to the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu for this year’s production of “The Rocky Horror Show.” However, before the Time Warp begins, be sure and schedule a babysitter for this adult night on the town. Rocky opens Friday and runs through Halloween.
“’The Rocky Horror Show’ is one of our community’s favorite shows to come and see,” said the show’s director, Nicole Gour. “’The Rocky Horror Show’ is a cult classic. Back in the ‘70s it was a movie and Tim Curry played the original Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter, the lead character in the show.”
“The Rocky Horror Show” is a British rock musical written by Richard O’Brien. It was remade into a film version in 1975, and quickly became a cult classic. A spoof of B-movies and science fiction films, the stage production is popular among community theatres nationwide, often making an appearance on marquees around Halloween.
This science fiction parody is an edgy, over-the-top tale of seduction and sexual confusion. Overflowing with unorthodox wit and a jaunty musical score, audiences will be singing the catchy tunes long after the show is over. Actors share the tale of two innocent teenagers, Brad and Janet, who run into car trouble, inadvertently leading them into the home of a maniacal scientist and one of his crazy experiments.
“This is truly an adult show,” said Gour. “The show is for 18 years and older only. There are very adult concepts and there’s a lot of audience participation. It’s an interactive experience and a really fun way for an adult to spend their Halloween, or the days leading up to Halloween.”
Rocky Horror is the first true audience participation movie, with audience interaction beginning during the film’s debut in 1975. Audience members dress up in costume, act out the film, and throw props during specific parts of the show. Some people like to attend the show just to watch the audience.
“The more you dress up the better,” said Gour. “We’re going to have a parade of costumes at the beginning of each show. There’s lots of special things that we do for first time Rocky Horror show goers. You can dress as one of the characters, or you can dress up in your favorite Halloween garb. All costumes are welcome.”
First-time audience members at “The Rocky Horror Show” are in for a special treat. The more surprises, the more fun there is to be had. Prepare to be engaged in an interactive evening of sexy, wild, fun. Seasoned show goers refer to first-time show-goers as “Virgins” — people who have never experienced “The Rocky Horror Show” in a theater with an audience and a live cast. They will proudly tell you that seeing in on home video “does not count.”
The most important thing to bring with you is an open mind and a sense of humor. If this is your first time, don’t worry — no one expects you to know what you’re doing on your first try. Remember, you’re a virgin. No one expects you to know anything.
