Meeting every human need: The Salvation Army begins season of giving
NORTH HAWAII — “We go out prior to Thanksgiving and find people who most need a meal,” said Corps Sergeant Major Gary Todd, an eight-year veteran soldier with the Salvation Army of Hawaii, who — along with a squadron of 60-plus volunteers — delivers nearly 700 Thanksgiving dinners to grateful tables in Waimea, Waikoloa and Honokaa.

HONOKAA — Students in Honokaa High School’s Leadership Training Program will host the annual community Thanksgiving dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday in the school cafeteria.

The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) will host their annual Winter Star Party directly following the Waimea Christmas Parade on Dec. 2. The Star Party, occurring at CFHT’s Waimea offices, will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m. CFHT staff and members of the West Hawaii astronomy club will set telescopes on the front lawn for community members to view the stars above.

Bringing home the trophies: Parker School Debate Team wins statewide sweepstakes tournament
WAIMEA — Parker School’s 37 debaters won 79 ballots Nov. 11 at the Punahou School Non-Qualifying Speech and Debate Tournament on Oahu, winning the trophy for the largest overall number of wins. Punahou School placed second with 51 ballots.

Filing domestic violence restraining orders becomes easier
Ex parte petition forms for temporary restraining orders (TRO) can now be dropped off at the South Kohala District Courthouse in Waimea. Victims can access the form 24/7 at the Waimea police station. After hours, the dispatch can be contacted via a phone by the door to request a TRO packet. Petitioners’ address and phone number be kept confidential.

Now through Jan. 6, the miniature hand-crafted village celebrates the spirit of the holiday season at Isaacs Art Center in Waimea. Toy stores, markets, fruit and vegetable stands, art and candy shops are “peopled” with tiny wooden mice scurrying to take flight as the reindeer on Santa’s sleigh. The Christmas panorama reflects the imagination and talent of beloved island painter and rancher Martha Greenwell. Artifacts featured in the display were assembled over eight years from the attic and tool shed of Greenwell’s Palani Ranch.
