2. Self defense killings.

Gun control means being an informed and reasonable citizen. Our society has no need for military grade anything. The NRA has gone over the deep end on their policy agenda. No-one has been jailed in the UK for shooting in self defense for goodness sake. You may be mis-remembering the case of Brett Osborn who was found guilty of manslaughter for killing an unarmed intruder with a knife. It was deemed to be an inappropriate use of force as the intruder was unarmed, and Mr Osborn admitted to deliberately injuring the victim.
That case is still considered controversial, especially as many others have successfully invoked self-defense when accused of murdering an intruder. The main difference in those cases has been that the intruder has been armed with a knife or machete.

No one is trying to take your guns away. in fact, had you taken the time to listen to the student speakers at the march, each and every one of them explicitly made it clear that their aim was NOT to take “good citizens” firearms.
What they are asking for are sensible and enforceable gun control laws, such as complete background checks (no exceptions) and regulation of add-ons that make semi-automatic weapons perform as fully automatic weapons (that are strongly regulated).
BTW, recent polls show that the vast majority of NRA members agree with these positions!

1) Look at any other civilized country with more sensible gun laws, and gun deaths are significantly lower
2) The movement is not proposing taking away your guns, so don’t be paranoid! It just wants some sensible laws to keep the most deadly guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, those too young to even vote or buy beer, terrorists, etc. and not allow the most deadly guns used in war the increase carnage in mass shooting (bump stocks, assault weapons). Law abiding citizens can still get guns if it’s important to you. Why wouldn’t you want to try to reduce the risk of your kid being murdered in school by a nut-case, going to a concert in Las Vegas and being gunned down, or just leaving your rural farm?
3) Yes, mass shootings may have increased in the past decade, when Obama happened to be president. It’s a ridiculous argument that he or the democrats caused it. You could argue it was after loosening of restrictions in the previous decade, with Republican Administration and often Congress, as well as Republican-led state governments. Or more likely not related to the president. Obama was unable to make progress because after Sandy Hook, the Republican-led Congress prevented any meaningful action.
4) Our gun laws (or lackthereof) in our society are radical. Fueled by irrational fear propagated by the NRA that the government is going to take away all your guns. The result — a wild west uncivilized society where weapons of war are used to kill innocents everyday. The statistics are off the chart. Doing nothing is criminal, especially when there are so many commonsense things that can be done to reduce some of these preventable murders.
Tom… 11 teens per day are killed because of texting while driving. Just as with guns, there are laws against texting while driving, just as there are laws against shooting people for no reason.
Sadly, in both cases there will be people who ignore said laws and kill people.
Oh, and over 250,000 people are killed in vehicle accidents per year, far more than the < 10,000 shot and killed. (Yes, < 10,000... the larger number you always hear bandied around includes almost 70% suicides...)

Yes, laws and rules will often be ignored and are sometimes difficult to enforce. But that’s not a reason to not have laws and rules. There are too many obvious laws that should be on the books to reduce gun violence but aren’t because of a radicalized minority who worship guns (a psychological weakness, in my opinion).
Will better gun laws reduce gun deaths to zero? No. Will they decrease them? Almost definitely (look at other countries), and it is immoral and just plain dumb to not try. I’ll like to see firearm and vehicle deaths greatly reduced in my lifetime. It’s freaking frustrating we have to overcome people like you to live in a safer society. There is a minimum age for driving, tests that needs to be passed, strong enforcement on the road, etc, which match the fact that vehicles can be dangerous when used by fallible or ill-intentioned humans. Guns, which are a lot less important (if at all) to our way of life than driving cars, have less restrictions. It’s outrageous!
