Man apparently drowns in waters off Waipio Valley

KAILUA-KONA — A man in his late-50s apparently drowned Saturday in waters off Waipio Valley.

Responding to the 11:58 a.m. alarm, fire rescue personnel arrived Waipio Valley Beach at 12:42 p.m. to find a man in his late-50s lying on his back near the shoreline with a bystander performing CPR, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

Bystanders reported that the man had been found floating face-down in about 5 feet of water. It was unclear how long he had been in that position before bystanders pulled him to shore and began CPR, according to the department.

Once on scene, medics took over and initiated advanced life-saving protocols. Chopper 2 then took the victim to awaiting medics who transported him to North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Bystanders said the man may have drowned, however, the cause of death is under investigation, according to the department.
