Charter Commission wraps up six-town roadshow

HILO — A sparse audience Thursday evening capped off six public hearings as the county Charter Commission wrapped up its roadshow giving residents all over the island a chance to weigh in on proposed changes to the county’s fundamental governing document.

HILO — The Charter Commission will consider holding a special election later this year, rather than adding charter amendments to a 2020 general election ballot already crowded with candidates for president, Congress, county mayor, prosecutor and County Council.

HTA board OKs $2.5M to boost tourism on island

KAILUA-KONA — The Hawaii Tourism Authority’s board of directors at the end of last month OK’d reallocating $2.5 million to support new marketing efforts to help boost tourism numbers on Hawaii Island following the drop that followed last year’s eruption.

Eruption pause provides an opportunity to probe volcanic pollution

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK — The end of Kilauea’s 2018 eruption this past September was accompanied by an enormous decrease in the amount of sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) emitted from the volcano. This has led to beautifully clear skies gracing Hawaii Island, particularly noticeable on the west side, where the volcanic pollution known as vog chronically collected in past years.
