Paniolo and pa’u riders will “ride again” in the fourth annual “Old Hawaii on Horseback” May 17, The colorful pageant presented by Mrs. Anna Perry-Fiske begins at 1 p.m. at her Anna Ranch in Waimea.

More than 3,500 persons are expected to be on hand when the fourth annual “Old Hawaii on Horseback” pageant gets underway. The event is considered one of the most colorful affairs on the Big Island.

Featured will be more than 100 riders and horses portraying such events in Waimea’s history as Captain George Vancouver bringing the first cattle to Hawaii in 1793; Captain Richard Cleveland’s landing of a mare and a colt in 1803 as a fit to Kamehameha I; and he arrivals of many of the early missionaries. The show is written, produced and directed by Perry-Fiske.

“Airport, Harbor Tour Is Friday”

The Kona Civic Club is hosting a 4-wheel vehicle conducted tour by state Sen. Hebden Porteus and Dr. Fujio Matsuda, Director of Transportation, of the Keahole airport and the Honokohau harbor sites Friday.

The co-champs of the Big Island Spelling Bee are both from West Hawaii, Gail Kawahara of Holualoa School and Barbara Lui of Naalehu School.

The winners are now prepared to represent Hawaii District in the State finals to be held May 2 in Honolulu. The state winner will go to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Spelling Bee.
