Michael Austin McCormick

Michael Austin McCormick, of Ocean View, died May 5, 2019, in Kealakekua. Born July 28, 1948, in San Francisco, he worked in County Highway Maintenance in San Mateo County, California.

Private services will be held. Donations in Michael’s name may be made to the Hawaii Island Humane Society.

He is survived by sister, Sandra (Edwin) Coit of Waikoloa.

Louise Maikui

Louise “Sweetie” Leialoha Maikui, 75, of Hilo, died April 10, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Dec. 29, 1943, in Hilo, she was a retired site manager for the Hawaii County Nutrition Center; member of The Way The Truth The Life Fellowship, Hawaiian Civic Club in Laupahoehoe, Hawaiian Bowling Club, and the U.E. Club.

Services held.

She is survived by husband, Albert Maikui of Hilo; daughter, Laurie Ann Pelekane of Hilo; sons, Albert (Cheryl) Maikui of Honolulu, Oahu, Rudy (Debbie) Maikui of Hilo and Damien (Sui-Lin) Maikui of Waimea; brothers, John Chesebro Jr. of Hilo and Leonard (Juanita) Chesebro of Kona; sister, Georgiana (Revelation) Kalauli of Hilo; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert Aeder

Robert Donald Aeder, 93, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 28, 2019, at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born July 31, 1925, in Silverton, Ore., he was a retired computer sales representative and technician for IBM Corporation, and served as assistant first lieutenant for the US Navy.

Inurnment will be at Silverton Cemetery in Oregon.

He is survived by sons, Mark Aeder of Ocean View, Kirk (Nita) Aeder of Waikoloa, and Erik (Bonni) Aeder of Maui; a granddaughter; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Patricia Aeder

Patricia Maulding Aeder, 91, of Kailua-Kona, died Oct. 12, 2017, at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born Aug. 5, 1926, in Silverton, Ore., she was a homemaker.

Inurnment will be at Silverton Cemetery in Oregon.

She is survived by sons, Mark Aeder of Ocean View, Kirk (Nita) Aeder of Waikoloa, and Erik (Bonni) Aeder of Maui; a granddaughter; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Harold Yamaguchi

Harold Shigeo Yamaguchi, 100, of Hilo, died March 31, 2019, at a private care home in Hilo. Born March 13, 1919, in Wainaku, he worked for both Manufacturer’s Life Insurance Co. and Sears Roebuck &Co.; a charter member of the Hilo Casting Club; past chairman of the Board for CU Hawaii; member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter.

Private memorial services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

He is survived by his sister, Lillie Yuriko (Gerald) Noble of Missouri and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pamela Kamei

Pamela Midori Kamei, 54, of Pahala, died April 8, 2019, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born April 2, 1965, in Pahala, she was an elementary school teacher.

Private Services were held. The family requests no flowers or koden.

She is survived by parents, Raymond and Felicing Kamei of Pahala; a sister in-law; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Linus Chao

Linus Tze-Hsiu Chao, 89, of Mountain View, died May 1, 2019. Born in Jinan, China, he was an artist and art professor at Hawaii Community College.

Private services held.

He is survived by wife, Jane Chao of Mountain View; daughters, Grace Chao of Mountain View, Ann (Marc Bulterys) Chao of San Diego, Mary (Ole Bent Rye) Chao Rye of Palo Alto, California; son, Peter Chao of Santa Monica, California; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

George Yoshida

George Yoshida, 75, of Hilo, died April 7, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was the retired director of Parks and Recreation for the County of Hawaii, former director of Elderly Activities for the County of Hawaii, former educator at Mountain View Elementary School and Konawaena High School, vice president of the Waiakea Pirates Athletic Club, member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Kyodan and Hoyukai, Japanese Community Association of Hawaii (JCAH) and a host on Seniors Living in Paradise.

Friends may call 9-10:30 a.m. May 18 at Dodo Mortuary chapel; memorial service at 10:30. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Cheryl Yoshida of Hilo; sons, Layne (Cecilia Fong) Yoshida of Honolulu, Ryan (Louanne Ondo) Yoshida of Hilo, Kendall (Susan Chang-Yoshida) Yoshida of Honolulu; brother, Howard (Debbie) Yoshida of Tennessee; sister, Judith (Dennis) Tamanaha of Honolulu; eight grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy Hinokawa

Roy Tsuneo Hinokawa, 92, of Hilo, died April 28, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kohala, he was a retired chief warrant officer, maintenance supervisor and mechanic with the Hawaii Army National Guard, member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, American Legion Post No. 3, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6, Big Island National Guard Retirees Association, National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 2126 and veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War.

Friends may call 10-11 a.m. May 19 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel; memorial service at 11. Casual attire.

He is survived by daughters, Terilyn (Dean) Kubo of Hilo, Ly-Ann (Shoji) Takemura of Saitama, Japan; brother, Harry Hinokawa of San Francisco; caregiver, Carlina Fernandez of Hilo; one grandson; numerous nieces and nephews.

Frederick Machado

Frederick Ronald Machado, 73, of Volcano died April 23, 2019, at his residence. Born on Oahu, he was retired engine technician for the City and County of Honolulu, board of director at the Cooper Center in Volcano, member of the Rotary Club of Volcano and a veteran of the Hawaii Army National Guard.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. May 19 at the Cooper Center in Volcano. Casual attire.

He is survived by son, Alden Machado of Waikele, Oahu; daughter, Candace (Thomas) Escritor of Hilo; brothers, Peter Machado of Oahu, Richard Machado of Oahu; a brother-in-law; caregiver, Henrylene Kaapana of Volcano; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and aunties.

Marvin White

Marvin White, 69 of Hilo, died April 16, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. Born July 25, 1949, in Monroe, Louisiana, he was a maile lei provider and member of Hilo Classic Cruisers Club.

Visitation will be held 2:30-3 p.m. May 19 at Haili Congregational Church. Services from 3-4 p.m. Committal services at noon May 20 at Veteran’s Cemetery No. 2.

Marvin is survived by mother, Ann Nathaniel of Hilo; son, Timothy Sneed of Lasalle, Illinois; daughter Leilani Moffit of Anaheim, California; brothers, James Earl White III of Downey, California, Glenn Mitchell White of Puna, Robert White of Tomball, Texas, William Nathaniel Jr. of Hilo, Jonathan Nathaniel of Hilo; Jimmie White of Tomball, Texas; and 2 grandchildren

Matthew Heneralau

Matthew Mateo Heneralau, 78, of Kealakekua, died April 9, 2019, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Aug. 6, 1940, in Holualoa. He was a retired staff sergeant and unit administrator with the Hawaii National Guard in Kealakekua; a retired non-commissioned officer with 42 years of service; Vietnam War veteran; member of Vietnam Combat Veterans Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Big Island National Guard Retirees and a lifetime member of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States; associate advisor for the Holualoa Explorer Post 26, an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster of Holualoa Boy Scout Troop 26; founder and advisor of the Holualoa Eagle Scout Service Society; former president and JCI senator for Kona Jaycees; and an usher an eucharistic minister at St. Michael’s Church.

Service will be held at St. Michael’s Church in Kailua-Kona on June 15. Visitation at 9 a.m.; service at 10:30 a.m. The family asks that casual attire be worn and flowers be omitted. Light refreshments to follow until 2 p.m.

He is survived by wife, Elsie of Kealakekua; sons, Walter (Mahea) Heneralau of Waiaha; Wayne Ferreira of Washington; daughters, Raelynn (Shawn) Miller of New York, Linnell Heneralau, and Joshleen (Jason) Baker both of Kailua-Kona; Valerie Ferreira of Waimea; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces.

Elaine Soga

Elaine Yachie Soga, 91, of Hilo, died April 26, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Pahoa, she was a retired office manager for the former Bishop Insurance Agency and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Buddhist Women’s Association.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. May 18 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 5 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by daughters, Carlene (Carl) Nakashima of Las Vegas, Lorilei Nakashima of Hilo, Mari Nakashima of Las Vegas; brothers, Terumi (Miyoko) Sato of Honolulu, Roy (Akiko) Sato of Kurtistown; sisters, Yasuko Honda of Honolulu, Eileen Kajiyama of Pahoa, Barbara Tsukamoto of Honolulu; two granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

Keith Mense

Keith Robert Mense, 64, of Volcano, died April 25, 2019, at his residence. Born in Missouri in 1954, he was a member of the Kamana Senior Center and a long-time art student at Hilo Community College.

A celebration of life will be held at Isaac Hale Beach Park in Pahoa from noon to 6 p.m. May 27.

He is survived by wife, Lizi Olson; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; ex-girlfriend and mother of his children, Laura Walker of Glennwood, Puna; three grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

Elizabeth Mayer

Elizabeth “Betty” Billmire Mayer, 87, of Kailua-Kona, died May 4 at her residence. Born Nov. 24, 1931, in Sterling, Ill., she was a retired coordinator of teacher training for Arizona State University, a life-long educator and founder of Mayer School in Ithaca, N.Y.

Private scattering of ashes held. Donations may be sent to Hospice of Kona, P.O. Box 4130, Kailua Kona, Hawaii, 96745.

She is survived by sons, John (Debora) Mayer of New Hampshire, Frank (Kim) Mayer of Colorado, Bill (Laurie) Mayer of Maine; daughter, Helen (Christine) Mayer of California; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous hanai grandchildren.
