LAS VEGAS— Blood was flowing down Tyson Fury’s right cheek, and Otto Wallin was in his face. His scheduled rematch with Deontay Wilder suddenly in jeopardy, Fury needed to dig deep in a fight that wasn’t supposed to be this hard.

Recovery funds get slow start

Hawaii County could receive more than $300 million in state and federal funding to support recovery and response efforts stemming from the 2018 eruption of Kilauea volcano, but only a portion of funding has so far been obtained and even less has been spent as the county works to cement long-term recovery plans.

I read Aunty Anne Hamilton’s letter with amusement. She claimed that the protectors are bad-faith actors. I visited the protectors’ camp and there was a spirit of aloha, good faith, education, reverence, respectfulness and non-violence. Everyone in the camp had a smile and aloha was present for all to feel.

Desertification is nothing new to the world, but global warming combined with human activities is accelerating this phenomenon. The old saying “Rain follows the forest and desert follows man” is rather depressing but it doesn’t have to be if we understand how deserts are created and how we can reverse the process. The Brazilian Amazon forests covered almost twice the size they do now prior to when the first Europeans entered the scene. Now vast grasslands that are prone to fires put more pressure on the remaining forests.

Volcano Watch: Volcano scientists gather for a volatile meeting

HILO — This week, a group of volcanic gas scientists from across the United States, including staff from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, will gather at the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Washington, for a workshop to improve and facilitate collaboration within the volcanic gas community during times of eruption or volcanic unrest.
